300 alternative sites in South Lakeland housing consultation

Public consultation over plans to allow thousands of affordable homes to be built in South Lakeland is being extended after 300 alternative sites were suggested.

The council, which wants to see 6,000 new homes built by 2025, said it received a ‘huge response’ to its initial consultation earlier this year, with more that 3,400 people and organisations making their views known. This added up to 4,500 individual representations.

South Lakeland District Council will begin a new six-week dialogue with communities to determine whether the freshly-identified sites are suitable for development, ending on 9th September.

Details and maps of the sites under consultation can be viewed by visiting this link.

The new consultation, that deals only with these 300 alternative sites, will seek people’s views on reducing the ‘time horizon’ of the land allocations document from 2025 to 2020; and how the development needs of small villages, hamlets and countryside may best be addressed.

People are invited to take part in the consultation either online, or by visiting the council’s offices in Kendal and Ulverston.

Information will also be available at Victoria Hall in Grange over Sands plus at libraries in Arnside, Grange over Sands, Kendal, Kirkby Lonsdale, Milnthorpe and Ulverston.

All sites being considered are in South Lakeland but outside the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales national park boundaries. Some parcels of land are suggested as potential employment sites.

The new locations are spread around the district and include sites in Kendal, Ulverston, Grange, Kirkby Lonsdsale, Endmoor, Burneside, Natland and Oxenholme. They also include proposals for development along the A590 corridor between Kendal and the M6.

This consultation follows a twelve week consultation on the council’s land allocation strategy that was completed earlier this year, with campaign groups springing up around South Lakeland to oppose some of the initially earmarked locations.
